All life is research, as I am fond of saying, and the time spent at Wellington College was fascinating in itself. I don't often get the chance to visit - much less feel part of - any of the classic public schools, so simply being around the place was an experience. I saw a deer minutes after I arrived, had to cross a clay pigeon range to get to the camp and enjoyed playing 'Spot the Duke Reference' around the grounds. That normally costs an arm and a leg and requires connections most of us don't have. And when I finish my first novel, one of the schools in it will look eerily similar to Wellington...
